The Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages is mandated to promote the advancement of both official languages in New Brunswick. Additionally, the Office works to investigate, report on and make recommendations regarding compliance with the Official Languages Act.
Appointed under the authority of the Official Languages Act, the Commissioner of Official Languages is an officer of the Legislative Assembly and is independent of the executive branch of government.
Essential Qualifications:
- A demonstrated passion and respect for the preservation and promotion of New Brunswick's official languages.
- A post-secondary degree, preferably in the field of law or in a relevant discipline (e.g., public administration, finance, or accounting).
- Minimum of 10 years' work experience in one or a combination of the following:
- Administrative law and procedure
- Extensive interpretation of legislation, regulation and policy
- Resolution of disputes of a sensitive and confidential nature using formal and informal conflict resolution approaches
- Senior management experience in a private or public sector organization, including managing financial and human resources.
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present on sensitive and frequently complex issues and organizational needs.
- Must be eligible to work in Canada.
Subject to the response of this competition, an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered, or the required years of experience may be increased.
Written and spoken competence in English and French is required. Please state your language capability on your application and identify your preferred language of assessment.

Asset Qualifications: Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate one or more of the following asset qualifications:
- Knowledge of the Act and mandate of the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages
- Familiarity with New Brunswick culture and context
- An understanding of the structure and operation of the Government of New Brunswick
Technical Competencies: Successful candidates will possess the following technical competencies:
- Knowledge of applicable legislation.
- Specialized subject matter expertise and knowledge related to language rights.
Before an appointment can be made, the successful candidate will be required to complete the following:
- New Brunswick second language evaluation, unless a valid second language evaluation certificate is provided;
- Reference checks;
- Criminal record check;
- Confirmation of good standing with professional associations, if applicable
Conditions / Compensation:
- Compensation and benefits comparable to Deputy Heads within the Government of New Brunswick (Salary range: $172,978 - $228,020)
- Travel is required
- Term: 7 years, non-renewable
- Location: Fredericton

Selection process:
Candidates will be required to successfully complete a comprehensive assessment that will include testing, interview, and a presentation to a selection committee.
